I just returned from the DRI Young Lawyers Committee http://www.dri.org/open/Committees.aspx?com=0240 leadership meeting in Chicago, and I have to say that DRI and defense bar appear to be in good hands looking towards the future. Nowadays, there are articles about law school graduates and young attorneys expecting to be coddled as they enter the work force, after all, they are the generation where everyone got a trophy. That is not the case with the 40 young attorneys I spent the afternoon with.

The meeting presented reports from 21 different initiatives and subcommittees ranging from the committee's annual seminar to a Supreme Court committee that organizes a swearing in ceremony at the Supreme Court of the United States to Diversity efforts to Women Attorney mentoring. The leadership is diverse, welcoming and definitely hard working.

These young attorneys and the thousands of other members of the Committee are the future of the defense bar. Many will go "in-house" and become General Counsel. Some will become judges and most will become successful private practitioners. In large part, they will be successful because of the skills they develop in their practices, the education and training they get from DRI programming, and the relationships they build through this committee and, as they call it "Big DRI."

Young lawyers that are starting out need a home outside their firms. The DRI Young Lawyers Committee is a big house with many rooms. Join, get involved -- from what I saw, you won't regret it.

Thanks, Matt!  Having your and Jay's participation and guidance was very helpful both in steering our initiatives and in illustrating DRI's committment to newer lawyers' meaningful involvement in DRI.

As you saw, we have a lot of very smart, hardworking people involved in our committee.  Please do keep us in mind when we can assist in the organization's initiatives.

Will do Cynthia.  I am proud to be an officer of DRI and I am sure that the Executive Committee will definitely be calling on your committee this  year and next year when you are Chair.

As a Young Lawyers Committee (YLC) member, I would just like to add that in addition to being a wonderful way to get involved and develop outstanding litigation and trial skills, the YLC is also a fabulous way to network and develop new business.  I personally have received several referrals from contacts I have met and gotten to know through DRI.  As we young lawyers develop our careers, as Matt said, we find ourselves more and more being in a postion to refer cases to each other - we go in-house, we become partners and yes, some of us even become judges!  Just the other day, in fact, a good friend I met through DRI announced that he would be taking the bench.  Ok, well, no more referrals from him I guess, but the point is that the DRI YL Committee is not only a place to come to develop your skills and learn about the latests developments in the law but it is also a great place to meet new people - who could very well become new clients or the source of new business.  In this economy, how can you beat that??  No one (including me) is saying that all of this can happen over night.  But get involved NOW and get going.  You'll be amazed at how quickly your friends can become your clients. What have you got to lose?  If any young lawyer reads this and wants to get involved - drop me a line.  laurie.miller@elliswinters.com  We'd love to have you join us!

Thanks to all the Young Lawyers Steering Committee members, DRI First Vice President Matt Cairns, DRI Board Liaison Jay Harris, and the DRI staff, who made this weekend's Young Lawyers Committee fly-in meeting in Chicago a success.  Everyone should stay tuned for the YLC's new and exciting initiatives, programs and activities!  If you are a young lawyer and want to become more involved in the YLC, please contact me. Also, please contact me if you are a DRI Committee leader and need help from the YLC.  The YLC is full of hard-working and energetic lawyers who have a lot to offer to any project.
